The story behind this photo
The Long Ridge, Wapiti Valley
One ridge, end to end. Morning light catches the peaks above the North Fork of the Shoshone River, on the road between Cody and Yellowstone's East Entrance, August 23, 2026. The river winds through the Wapiti Valley below.
This stretch of the valley is home to the Wapiti Ranger Station, built in 1903, the first ranger station constructed at federal expense in the United States. It stands in the Shoshone National Forest, the first national forest in the nation. As an early forest superintendent recalled, the place was christened "Wapiti," the proper name for elk.
