The story behind this photo
The Alarm Clock Bird, Zimbabwe
Small bird, big color, wild in Zimbabwe. A crested barbet holds its perch on a thorny, lichen-covered branch in Zimbabwe on the morning of May 26, 2026, photographed in the wild. A shaggy speckled crest, a yellow face, white spots on black, and a flash of red at the rump.
Crested barbets are common in the woodlands of Zimbabwe and across southern Africa. Their long trilling call has been likened to a muffled alarm clock. In Shona the bird is called chizuvaguru.
